The Swedish School started in 1996 and currently has over 100 students. It is a non-profit organization whose members are parents of Swedish heritage who need support in teaching the Swedish language and culture to their children. The school also includes a growing number of "Friends of the School" who take an interest in the school and enjoy participation in various school activities.
The school is governed by a board of directors who convenes once a month and oversees all fiscal, judicial, curricular and social matters of the school, looks after the school's interests, and sets up goals for the future. Suggestions and ideas presented to the Board from the members are always encouraged.
The overriding purpose of The Swedish School is to provide the students with a supplementary education in the Swedish language and culture. Through oral and written activities the students are given the opportunity to increase their understanding of the Swedish language and heritage. This takes place in a stimulating environment enriched by holiday celebrations and other cultural events occurring throughout the year, e.g. St Lucia, Christmas, and Easter, as well as a combined graduation and
midsummer festival. The school also maintains a Swedish library of children's literature and movies for all ages.
The Swedish School for children is organized in two tiers: Preschool (Svenska Förskolan) and Swedish School, Kindergarten through 9th grade (Svenska Skolan).
Adult School (Vuxenskolan), offers Swedish language classes to English-speaking adults.
